Since the mid-1990s people in China have been given seven consecutive days off work during the Chinese New Year. Also, as depicted in today’s Doodle artwork, Lunar New Year is often celebrated with lively lion dances. The holiday is sometimes called the Lunar New Year because the dates of celebration follow the phases of the moon. Throughout most of Asia and around the world, the lunar new year is warmly welcomed with traditional foods such as yú (fish), nian gao (new year cake), and tang yuan (sweet rice ball). The ox is the second animal of the Chinese zodiac and symbolizes hard work, positivity, and fertile harvest. It starts with the onset of the Little Year and culminates in the Lantern Festival. ![]() In the year 2023, the Chinese New Year or the Spring Festival will be celebrated on January 22nd. If you were born in one of the years, then you are a Rabbit. This means that the first day of the Lunar New Year can occur anytime between January 21 and February 20. While the official date of Lunar New Year 2023 is Sunday, January 22, many organizations in the Cleveland are host events surrounding this date to celebrate. ![]() Chinese New Year 2024 is a Year of the Dragon, more specifically, Wood Dragon, starting from February 10th, 2024, and lasting until January 28th, 2025. Lunar New Year begins on the date (in East Asia) of the second new Moon after the winter solstice, which always takes place in late December. This Lunar New Year marks the official transition out of the Year of the Rat–believed to be one of constant change–and into the Year of the Ox, which is traditionally associated with things moving at a more slow and steady pace. Since the New Year holiday is on the second new moon after the winter solstice (December 21), it varies from year to year.
